Why We Need to Let Oklahoma Vote
Oklahoma has the most restrictive ballot initiative processes in the country:
- Oklahoma has the highest signature requirement in the nation and voters only have 90 days to meet the requirement
- The process is so restrictive that only three initiatives have made it to the ballot in the last ten years.
- Petitions are often thrown off the ballot on mere technicalities after all the hard work of collecting signatures has been done
Now, citizens have a chance to reform the process so they can use their constitutionally guaranteed right to initiative. We can tell our state legislators to vote for bills that will strengthen the initiative process:
Senate Bill 800 and House Bill 2246: HB 2246 will expand the restrictive 90 day limit on gathering signatures to one year. When Oklahomans go through all the hard work of a petition drive it is only fair to give us enough time to do it.
SB 800 will move any challenges to the ballot wording (“gist statement”) to the beginning of a petition drive. This prevents petitions from being thrown out after all the hard work of collecting signatures has been done because of a mere bureaucratic technicality.
Take action to protect Oklahoma’s ballot initiative! Send a message to your state Senator and Representative telling them to Let Oklahoma Vote! Call the Governor’s office at (405) 521-2342 and tell him to sign HB 2246 and SB 800!
